Obviously one of the most unfortunately named stadiums in these contiguous United States, Dix Stadium is also one of the more unfortunate fields in Ohio. The "stadium" was opened in 1969 and has as of yet still not sold out for a game. If anyone is suprised that the Golden Flashes cannot fill a 30,000 seat stadium, then I have some good news for you: Kent State plans on removing the seats from the North and South end of the field in order to shrink its size down a bit. The visiting side of the field was also the same seating capacity as that of my high school soccer field. The place is a dump, and to be honest, I don't know how Kent St. manages to continue on as a Div. I-A football team. I would imagine that renaming the stadium should be first on the list of things to do rather than shrinking its seating capacity, but I'm also lucky to be holding a bachelor's degree.
Google Map of Dix Stadium (trust me).

Are you sure about their plan to reduce the stadium capacity? NCAA rules state a D-1A football program must play in a facility with a minimum seating capacity of 30,000 so any attempt to reduce it would jeopardize their 1-A status.
i went to a game at dix stadium when they played marshall a few years ago when marshall still had leftwich and kent had joshua cribbs. the visiting side was filled up and i was basically scared for my life that those things were just going to collapse at any moment whenever someone got up to leave or came back with another hot dog. not a pleasant experience at all.
greg: I think that rule may not be in play as much as the NCAA wants people to think it is. I know for sure that Florida Atlantic (marginally DI-A) has about a 20,000 seat capacity. I think the rule more surrounds how many tickets they sell per week, and that most of the MAC schools are on the verge of that number, if not already below it. There was a really good story written on this that I saw recently, and I just cannot even come close to remembering where I saw it...
